Belorusia is a Berlin-based musician and visual artist from Glasgow, Scotland. Upon moving to Berlin in 2012 the project began as a means of keeping a diary through sound and imagery. Since then it has evolved into an all-enveloping audiovisual project which will see its live debut in 2018.
The sound is at once familiar yet distant, evoking atmospheric vistas and created using a combination of live recordings, electronic instruments and samples. The resulting compositions are multi-layered tapestries that reveal more with each listen.
Belorusia draws inspiration from a wide range of genres, such as ambient (of course) to classical to shoegaze. For him Ambient music is about creating an imaginary world through the manipulation of sound in space.
Vladimir Nabokov sums it up perfectly.
“No single word in English renders all the shades of toska. At its deepest and most painful, it is a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. At less morbid levels it is a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness, mental throes, yearning. In particular cases it may be the desire for somebody of something specific, nostalgia, love-sickness. At the lowest level it grades into ennui, boredom."
